Hypnotherapy Vs Meditation

 People often ask me as a clinical hypnotherapist what the difference between meditation and hypnosis is.  It’s an interesting question because on the surface both modalities appear very similar.  To anyone who hasn’t experienced either, it’s nearly impossible to tell them apart. .  To be honest at first I found it hard to explain the differences myself and needed to find a better way of explaining my craft.  So, why should someone opt for hypnosis over guided meditation?

What are the similarities between the two?

  • They both aim to relax you. They are extremely calming and beneficial to your mental and physical wellbeing.
  • Both can even use similar techniques to enable you to calm the body and mind. These may include: deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, relaxing one body part at a time until the whole body is relaxed, or simply holding an image, mantra or thought in the mind and allowing that to be the one and only focus until everything else just quietens down and disappears.
  • Both hypnotherapy and meditation can be done alone, as with self-hypnosis, or with a practitioner such as with guided mediation.
  • And of course, both modalities offer far-reaching health benefits and when practiced regularly can create a positive improvement to people’s lives.

Lets understanding the differences!


  • The main being that hypnotherapy has a primary goal; whether that is to quit smoking, lose weight, change poor lifestyle choices, reduce anxiety or deal with something holding you back from reaching happiness.  Hypnosis has an agenda and that is to reach the places in the subconscious that enable you to make choices based on what is right for you – away from your conscious limitations and self-sabotaging language.  That primary purpose is the goal and the therapy is guided around what the client needs to experience in order to find the answers they are looking for to make that lasting change.


  • Meditation on the other hand has no particular goal other than in its purest form, to completely empty the mind of all thoughts.  Meditation is commonly described as the absence of all thought.

Ultimately I believe that both hypnotherapy and meditation can take an individual to a similar end goal but the way in which they get there is quite different.  Each harnesses the power of the subconscious mind to eliminate the ego chatter that is with us day to day. Both enable you to think beyond the surface and make choices based on a deeper level of self-awareness. You could say the two are complementary. Hypnotherapy and meditation are both rewarding and enlightening experiences, which can help people live happier, more fulfilling lives.
